About Tokyo Kantorei

[Tokyo Kantorei's stage photo (JPEG)] From the 20th annual concert (December 11, 1993)
Our chorus, Tokyo Kantorei, was established on February, 1973. Its matrix was Chor Glanze, which was established on April, 1968, by Mr. Eiichi Itoh's advocacy. The detail of establishment and the record of its concerts will be seen on "Tokyo Kantorei's History" page (now on translating).

Tokyo Kantorei's aims are (1) To assimilate Mr. Itoh's richness in music, (2) To keep in mind to express enough the music which he is after, (3) To play high level chorus centering German music. Of course we are a group of chorus freaks, and we are trying to find pleasure in singing itself, not singing in a happy salon-like atmosphere as often seen in common chorus groups.

Our members' occupations are various, such as office worker, teacher, house wife. For quitting by transferring or marriage is not uncommon, we are worrying about keeping Kantorei's tone and balance between the voice parts.

The word "Kantorei" (kahn-to-rî') is a German, and it means not only a holy choir but a chorus conducted by a chorus master which is called Kantor (kahn'tor) in German, and the word is used widely. Tokyo Kantorei's godfather is Mr. Seiichi Higashikawa, Musicology Professor Emeritus of Tokyo Gakugei University.

We entrust Mr. Yoshiharu Nakamura, Professor Emeritus of Tokyo Gakugei University, with voice training for years.
