Fruitbat Watching Around the World

We've been enthusiastically watching fruitbats for almost 15 years. And traveled many places in Japan and overseas to watch flying foxes. Our ambition is to watch all 170 species of flying foxes in the world. If you have any comment about this page please send e-mail to 　Keiko Osawa

OVERSEAS
Africa	An earthy paradise, the Seychelles	We heard that there are so many fruitbats in the Seychelles that they are ingredients for curry
Australia	Bat Hospital	There's a bat hospital in Tolga in Australia
	Around Cairns	We have been longing for fruitbats full of the sky. We have seen a big colony of Spectacled flying foxes.
	Want to see swimming flying foxes	On hot dry days flying foxes jump in the river and soak their belly at the start of their evening flight to cool themselves down and drink water in Bellingen in Australia.
Asia	In Singapore, a furoshiki ( a large square cloth for wrapping and carrying a bundle)flies	On the way back from the Seychells we stayed at Singapore. We didn't see any fruit bat but instead we saw a flying lemur.
	Green Island in Taiwan	The Green Island 台湾の南東部にある緑島には、沖縄と同じクビワオオコウモリが生息しています。探しにいったはずなのですが、何しろ台風の影響で雨ばかりで・・・1999年12月23日完成
	Bat Kingdom	フィリピンのスービックにはその名もコウモリ王国という保護区があります。世界最大のジャワオオコウモリとフィリピンオオコウモリ約２万頭のキャンプがリゾートホテルのすぐそばに。2004年4月2日完成
	The sea eagle island, Langkawi 　2004.8.16～8.23	ある日目に留まったJTBのパンフレットには、海鷲が飛び交うというキャプションと共に、海の上を乱舞するオオコウモリが。
Pacific Islands	American Samoa	オオコウモリの生息地保護のためにつくられたアメリカ領の国立公園。日本からはもちろん、アメリカからも訪れる人はほとんどいないけど、熱帯雨林にたくさんのオオコウモリやグンカンドリ・カツオドリが飛び交う楽園です。1999年10月25日完成
	Rota	ロタはグアムとサイパンの間にある人口3000人ほどの小さな島です。チャモロの文化が色濃く残り、オオコウモリやオオトカゲが生息します。1999年12月19日完成。
	La　rousette	天国に一番近い島、ニューカレドニアにはオオコウモリが４種生息します。2002.11.3完成
	Christmas trees in tropics	パプアニューギニアはコウモリの図鑑が一冊できてしまうほど、小コウモリ、オオコウモリの多い国。きっとジャングルではオオコウモリがクリスマスツリーのようにぶら下がっているに違いない。2003.4完成
	BULA	世界中でフィジーのタベウニ島のDes Voeus Peakの頂上周辺にしかいないというフィジーキツネオオコウモリに会えることを期待して。２００３年１２月１日完成

Non-bat watching travels
	Maine state	アメリカにはオオコウモリはいませんが、縁があって何回か行きました。東海岸の一番北にあるメイン州はカナダに大きく食い込んでいます。ロブスターの産地、ホェールウォッチングやシールウォッチング、ごつごつした岩の海岸にすぐそばまで森が迫る自然の豊かな魅力的な地です。日本人観光客はあまり来ませんけれど、野生生物を訪ねるには魅力的です。１９９８年１２月６日完成
	Hawaii	On the way back from American Samoa, we dropped in Maui and Oaf

JAPAN	There are two species of flying foxes in Japan in the Ogasawara Islands and Okinawa and Kagoshima area.
	Minami Daito Island	Minamidaito Island is the place we met flying foxes for the first time 15 years ago. We have visited for the first time after 5 years. (2002)
	Hateruma Island	Hateruma Island is the most southern island that people live in Japan. There is an astronomical observatory and here we can see the Southern Cross. (2002)
	Kohama Island	Most tourist visit this island for several hours as a day trip. After sunset the island is a paradise for flying foxed (2002)
